AT&T Employees' Campaigns to Win Representation Spreads Throughout the Company's Non-Union Locations
AT&T employees' efforts to organize and win CWA representation at the corporation's non-union division is spreading. Since the employees' most recent election victory (AT&T Broadband, Springfield, Mo., May 9) union activists have filed consent election cards at five other locations.
Between May 16 and May 26, employees presented signed consent election cards to AT&T management at AT&T Broadband locations in Hannibal, Mo., and Overland (St. Louis); Dallas, Iowa City and Casper, Wyoming.
The representation election for the six outside technicians at Hannibal was held May 23, but the ballot count will not held until a Neutral Third Party resolves a dispute over the appropriateness of the workers' bargaining unit. A June 1 election has been set for the 30 outside technicians at Iowa City, and no election dates have been set for employees at Dallas, Overland, Casper, who filed cards with the American Arbitration Association on May 25.
According to the Neutrality and Consent Election agreement between AT&T and CWA, a representation election must take place within 7 days of the card filing unless there is a bargaining unit dispute between the workers and management. When there is a dispute, the election must take place within 14 days.
Issues for the AT&T employees at Casper include the way management sets wages and raises, and workers' inability to have a means to express their concerns to management.
