405 workers gain CWA representation at AT&T Broadband units in LA

Over 400 workers at two AT&T Broadband units in Los Angeles, CA, won CWA representation in a neutrality and consent election on Nov. 29. The vote count in the election was 233-132. The election is the third representation election victory for AT&T Broadband workers in California this year. In earlier elections held in July and October, 263 cable workers gained CWA representation at units in Fresno and Sacramento.

Employees in the newly-organized units, located in West Los Angeles and Bellflower, are outside technicians and warehouse employees. Workplace concerns which prompted the workers’ drive for a union are favoritism, the lack of promotion/transfer opportunities, and the arbitrary manner in which AT&T Broadband management determined pay raises and job assignments.

In the final days before election, Tom Pierce, AT&T Broadband’s Human Resources chief, held presentations for the workers about the upcoming election. The company held a total of 6 meetings to accommodate workers from both locations. The workers’ campaign succeeded because the workers’ inside organizing committees were strong and representative of the workforce at each location.

The following week, Dec. 6, 68 technicians at AT&T Broadband at Penn Hills in western Pennsylvania, voted 37-26 for CWA representation.
