Striking Adelphia Workers Receive Strong Support From Local Politicians

On Thursday, July 10th striking Teamsters took their concerns before the Auburn City Council. The 17 workers have been on strike against Adelphia since June 10th.
"Someone in government has to tell Adelphia to be a good citizen or get out of town. I realize it's a difficult decision, and it's going to take some courage to stand up to this Goliath," Said cable worker Allan Fedyshyn. "We made that decision June 10. As with David and Goliath, we have the slingshot and the courage. We need City Hall to supply the rock."

The local franchise agreement has been extended until October and the city will be looking closely at Adelphia’s behavior. Three politicians interested in becoming the next mayor have also become active in the strike. Republican candidate Tim Lattimore urged the city to consider running its own municipal cable operation, while fellow Republican Bill Jacobs attended a Teamsters rally in front of the Adelphia offices on Owasco Street two weeks ago. Chuck Mason, the Democratic mayoral candidate, is urging the city to not negotiate a new franchise agreement with Adelphia unless the contract dispute with the Teamsters is settled.
