Adelphia Workers in Cleveland Gain CWA Representation
Company's anti-union campaign failed to budge workers who signed public "unity" pledge before election
In an NLRB election held Sept. 10, cable workers at Adelphia Communications in Cleveland, voted 13 to 5 in favor of representation by CWA. Before the election, the 13 workers signed a unity pledge (reprinted below), openly demonstrating their support for getting a voice in their workplace.
Management waged a strong anti-union campaign, nevertheless the 13 workers stuck together. There are a total of 22 employees in the video production unit. CWA Local 4340 organizer John Kosek provided assistance to the workers, who were led by an outstanding inside committee.
There are an additional 350 technicians and customer service reps working for Adelphia in the Cleveland area.

To our fellow Programming Department Employees:
With all the changes taking place in Adelphia’s corporate structure, we the undersigned want to make sure that we have a voice in the shaping of the “new” Adelphia.
Our petition for a union election has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and we are committed to voting “yes” for having a union of our own.
We are working with the Communications Workers of America (CWA) to build a Voice for all of us in Community Programming to address concerns relating, but not limited to the following:
- A process by which problems can be immediately addressed and resolved.
- Consistency in scheduling procedures, with more advance notice for production requests to be able to plan our private lives.
- A fair pay system in line with industry standards including shift premiums, overtime policies and benefits (afforded any other Adelphia employee).
- Secure jobs, fair descriptions, layoff policies, training procedures.
Only together can we create positive charge to benefit ourselves, the company and especially our customers.
